Pink Poppi began with a vision of poppies dancing across a textured canvas. After sketching the idea, the creative process took over. Layers of white spackle p0aste and netting created depth and dimension, while drops of red, yellow, orange, black, and a touch of white acrylic paint were layered together. Using a straw, the wet paint was blown outward, allowing the colors to flow and mingle into petals of unexpected shapes and sizes. Silk stems, textured paper grass, and a delicate paper bird completed the composition. A light sprinkling of reddish paint across the canvas completed the piece.
A photograph of the finished mixed-media painting captured its layers, movement, and wonderfully imperfect flowers. The photograph was then digitally manipulated to create the deep, rich pink tones of Pink Poppi, giving the original artwork a bold new personality before transforming it into a distinctive wearable pattern.
